Burbank, CA, October 14, 2013—Virtual Speech Center Inc., the leading provider of mobile applications for speech therapy, today announced the release of Apraxia RainbowBee, an iPad application for apraxia of speech, available for download at Apple’s iTunes App store.
Childhood apraxia of speech is one of the most challenging disorders treated by speech and language pathologists due to the complex nature of this disorder and the fact that every child with apraxia of speech is unique and requires individualized and intensive speech therapy. Karin Howard, a speech and language pathologist from California, applies an individualized and holistic approach to treatment of childhood apraxia of speech in her private practice. Inspired by her own young patients, Karin wanted to create an app that would apply the motor planning and multisensory feedback principles but also allow full app customization, thereby making therapy more individualized. Karin contacted Virtual Speech Center with her app idea and the Apraxia RainbowBee was born.
The Apraxia RainbowBee app focuses on improving the planning, sequencing and coordination of muscle movements for speech production in children with apraxia of speech. The Apraxia RainbowBee app provides children with multiple opportunities to practice sequencing of various speech sounds, beginning with simple syllabic shapes such as CV or VC moving into more complex syllabic shapes such as CVC and then progressively multisyllabic words, phrases, and sentences.
The program incorporates multi-sensory feedback in the form of auditory and visual cues, and at some levels, tactile cues. The children are also able to audio-record themselves and compare their productions to pre-recorded audio productions included in the app.
The Apraxia RainbowBee app makes individualized speech therapy possible as therapists can upload their own custom images and record their own videos. This feature allows therapists to add words that are practical for their clients or students.
