The Evaluation Rubric for Speech Therapy Apps

Finding the right speech or language therapy app can be overwhelming. There are thousands of apps at the iTunes store. Some of the apps are developed by speech and language pathologists themselves. There are also many free apps that can be used in speech or language therapy, but they may contain pop-up ads that could interfere with therapy. Below is the rubric that was designed to help make an educated decision prior to purchasing an app. Please contact me if you have any suggestions, and I would be happy to modify or add more information to this rubric.

Grading

Excellent—5 stars

Good—4 stars

Fair—3-2 stars

Poor—1 star

Evidence-based practice

The app definitely supports evidence-based practice and provides research references.

The app supports evidence-based practice but does not provide any research references.

The app somehow supports the research.

The app does not support evidence-based practice and is not developmentally appropriate. 

Visual appearance

The graphics are clear, organized, and appealing. There are no ads.

The graphics are organized and somehow appealing. There are no ads.

The graphics are disorganized and not very appealing, or there may be some ads.

Flexibility

1. The app includes settings that can be changed, e.g., turn on/off audio recording.

Using IPad to teach verbs and tenses

In addition to traditional speech or language therapy materials such as flash cards, toys, or books, speech and language pathologists, parents, and educators can help children master English verbs and their tenses by using iPad apps. Verbs News, an iPad app developed by Virtual Speech Center for speech/language therapy, is an example of how technology can enhance the learning process. Verbs News not only provides the users with thousands of flashcards to practice both regular and irregular verbs in the simple present, present continuous, simple past, and simple future tenses, but allows children to practice verbs or tenses by utilizing the video-recording capabilities of the iPad. The theme of this iPad app for speech/language therapy is the newsroom: users can record their own “news” and watch it in the newsroom as a reward or as a carry-over activity to practice verbs and tenses. Below, you will find different lesson plans that target verbs using some of the features of the Verbs News speech/language therapy app.
